Blogger Spotlight: tinyvoid for American Heart Association

"I chose to represent the American Heart Association because my ex (who I am still best friends with) was born univentricular. He had a Fontan procedure when he was 3 (and the surgery was still new) and was not expected to live past 11 (they had no patients to base their estimate off of since none had yet grown up). His particular surgery lasted longer than any Classic Fontan ever performed and he was able to go without a second surgery until he was in his twenties.

"By the time he reached his twenties, a modified Fontan procedure was available and he was able to have a second surgery after he developed arrhythmia. Thanks to the efforts of the American Heart Association and programs like it, we were able to go to Chicago for a surgery that was not thought possible when he was born. Since his surgery, he has been more active and happier than I have ever seen him."
